Looking out, Checking in, saves lives | The Hello Project

Over 180,000 elderly live alone.

Looking out, checking in, saves lives.

What you can do

Too often our elderly loved ones are found at home alone, suffering, physically hurt and unable to help themselves.

But the signs were there. Even a porch light left on during the day could be a sign.

Make checking in with elderly neighbours and loved ones easy by adding a regular check-in to your calendar.

Add a check-in to your calendar

Simply, select a day and choose a time.

Tips to help you make a plan

Making a plan and knowing the signs can be the difference between a happy ending and a tragedy. If you’re a vulnerable elderly or you’re a
neighbour to a vulnerable elderly, below are some tips to help you make a plan together.

You’re a vulnerable elderly living alone

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours
  • Give them your contact number
  • Reassure them that you’re okay with them checking on you
  • Talk to them about what signs to look out for e.g. the curtains not pulled by 8am

You’re a neighbour to a vulnerable elderly

  • Make yourself known and get to know your elderly neighbour
  • Give them your contact number
  • Make a plan and talk to them about what signs to look out for e.g the porch light left on during the day

You have a vulnerable loved one but don’t live close by

  • Introduce yourself to the neighbours of your elderly loved one
  • Introduce your elderly loved one to the neighbours
  • Give them your contact number in case something happens
  • Make a plan together, so the neighbours know what signs to look out for e.g the newspaper not being collected
